Grandparents & Home Schooling

There seems to be a steady increase in the number of grandparents that are taking on additional roles within the family. As more working parents are having to devote their time to working and earning a decent income, grandparents are stepping in to fill the void. From full time babysitting to home schooling, grandparents are doing it all. Home schooling is very important to some families. It is a personal preference, one that more parents want to be involved with. When that is just not possible, it can truly be a gift to the children to have the educational time spent with their grandparents instead.

Schooling on any level is very serious and requires a vast amount of commitment. Grandparents that take on this role have a lot of work cut out for them. Kids can be a tough bunch to keep all going at a steady pace, especially when home schooling many of them. The first thing grandparents need to do when conducting school at home is to have a proper schedule for everyone to follow. This should include lesson time as well as accurately scheduled breaks. Kids can only work for so long before they need to take a few minutes to relax and give their minds a break.

Children that are different ages and grade levels should have their own special work space. It will help to keep them from becoming distracted by their siblings. Also, make sure to turn off any televisions or radios that could prove to be distracting as well. It is beneficial to check up on the kids quite regularly too if you do not sit with them while they work. It does not take much for them to stray from their duties.

When grandparents take over doing important tasks like this for the parents, it is necessary not to make too many drastic changes all at once. Even though everyone has their own methods of teaching, some rules and guidelines set by parents should not be changed. It could upset the delicate balance that the children have already grown accustomed to. Making serious changes could upset either the learning process or the parents if they have their own way of doing things.

Grandparents need to make children aware that when it is time to get to work, nothing else will be tolerated. It can be somewhat of a novelty to have grandma be the teacher. But learning time needs to be treated as such by everybody. Most children are used to have their grandparents be someone that comes to visit, play with them and generally spoil them in one manner or another. Home schooling will require that they see you as the teacher too. It can be a challenge to find a good balance that works both as teacher and as grandparent but it will not take that long to get used to once you set up a routine. Grandparents are perfect candidates to take on the special role of home school teacher. Children respect them and they have plenty to give to the younger generation.
